Pinterest Hidden Image

A sculptural British studio pottery vase attributed to Bernard Rooke, with the bold relief decoration and earthy surface treatment associated with his mid-century ceramic work.
The tall rectangular form is built from warm brown stoneware, with contrasting olive and ochre glazes running across the sides and upper rim. One face carries deeply worked abstract decoration, including a large circular motif with geometric and almost Cubist detailing, giving the vase a strong architectural quality.

The contrast between the heavily textured front and quieter glazed sides is particularly effective. From different angles it changes from graphic ceramic artwork to a wonderfully simple slab-built form.

The original paper label is no longer present and the base is unmarked, therefore the piece is offered as attributed to Bernard Rooke rather than definitively signed.

Condition
Good vintage condition with the irregularities, firing marks and surface variations associated with handmade studio pottery. There is age-related wear and some losses/irregularities to the textured decoration and glaze, particularly around the upper relief area. Please inspect the detailed photographs carefully as these form part of the condition description.
A strong piece of post-war British studio pottery that works equally well as a functional vase or as a freestanding sculptural ceramic object.
